Well I'm going to be completely honest on this post, I basically do not read, watch or listen to the news. I don't really know what it is about me, but I live in a tight bubble almost all the time. To give an example, in my Fall Uni class we did a current events portion of each class at the start and discussed mostly major Canadian happenings. I was not aware of a single event that we discussed in the whole semester, despite all my classmates seeming very knowledgeable of these latest events. My facebook feed is very tight, basically winter sports, canoeing groups, dogs, and friends posts. The odd friend shares a news story about the Ukraine Russian conflict, or fish farms, or hockey fights, but I never click on them. I believe this is why Twitter feels like standing in an aggressive hail storm to me. I really feel like most of what is being said is an inside joke that I am not in on, with some rude commentary following. I listen to podcasts, read many books (fiction and non-fiction), read a few select blogs, and watch the odd streaming show, but consume almost no current news except what is occurring in my community and what others are talking about. I read a few online articles regarding financial matters just to have some basic economic understandings for long term investment. Although this may seem abnormal, I might argue that this is likely how people functioned for the last 200'000 years of human evolution, and so it is the normal way to get news, from those around us. And so consuming endless online perspectives is very foreign to me, or maybe I am a very, very, critical thinker? That said I do love to read about history and appreciate the many perspectives that can be played out in the interpretation of past events. So once something has happened and the noise has died down, I do really love to dive into understanding the situation, the people, the causes, effects, and perspectives. It is just trying to keep up with current events that seems to make my head spin. So my main method of sorting fact from fiction is to be completely aware that most information online is skewed, locally unimportant, not true or just presenting one side of the story. Also the understanding, as Alec stated, trying to swim in the internet river will only cause drowning, so just dip a cup and take a sip periodically, my cup is pretty small I think. I did strongly agree with Chris B that fake news is a literacy problem much more than a technological problem. The issue I can't seem to overcome is that the literacy skills it takes to gleen accurate information from any online forum or source is like finding a needle in a stack of straw freshly removed from a barn.
I know this is not a great perspective as a teacher, especially in teaching digital citizenship, but my main areas of teaching are high school construction and mathematics. Both these subjects do not lend themselves to exploring current events or online media and so it seems to fit my personal bias to stay focused on very local information, ideas and occurrences. This is also the reason I really struggle with students and people spending so much time on their devices, it just makes little to no sense to me, as there is so much to do and see in the world! This was and is the reason for my Major Project - Ins.peer.tion - ironically done on social media (IG and TikTok). Lastly, I basically work (teach, acreage, university), parent, and coach from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed most days, so consuming more than 10 mins of social media and checking the weather is not in my schedule right now. If I have spare time, I play guitar or go outside to ski or hike... Does anyone else feel this way, or am I unique in this perspective?? Thanks for reading. 3/19/2022 01:05:04 pm
Hi John! I am much like you, in terms of limiting the amount of news I consume. It's really tough to convince me (these days) to pay attention to the news. Most news is so negative - and I don't need that negativity in my life. I feel like I'm on a "need to know" basis when it comes to current events. If I need to know it, someone will inform me!

You are not alone Dylan. The news makes me sad and makes me lose all kind of hope in humanity so I just live in my bubble and blissfully and intentionally avoid what is going on in the world unless there is something that is directly effecting me. I wonder the same thing, does this make me a terrible teacher? I don't think so, it just makes me naive and I am okay with that. Between parenting, university class, teaching, coaching basketball 5 days a week more than once a day between practices and games, getting to the gym, laundry, homework, groceries, etc, and all the other things in my life my 10 minutes of social media time is purely for pleasure and not about anything else, I just don't think I can add anything else in and keep my sanity and the news is just too darn depressing!

Glad to hear that we are similar in our lack of news habits and sounds like our schedules are similarly full! 3/19/2022 03:03:47 pm
I don't think your approach is abnormal at all, Dylan. It certainly might be uncommon in today's society, but I think it is a really healthy way to live! Although the internet can offer many great benefits, I also wonder how different aspects of life would improve with less social media and screen time. I think we could all take a page out of your book to find that balance between media and experiences in "the real world"!

Dylan, I think that the thoughts that you have shared are absolutely normal. I can totally relate with your way of handling devices. I use to be the same person, not much interested in new apps, new information ... however, now I have started my journey in this social media and learning about it everyday.

I'm the same way Dylan! I don't make time to look at any news during they day. If I am scrolling on Twitter and see something is trending, I will take some time to look into it. I get overwhelmed when I spend too much time looking at news articles and my head starts spinning! 3/21/2022 03:30:30 pm
I totally agree with you Dylan. These days I also do not pay much attention on the news running on social-media platforms. It has become hard to find which is fake and which one is real. Spending too much time on media apps just gives us stress. We should limit our screen time and decide the priorities of social media applications. Being choosy will save us every time.

Ha Ha Ha, Dylan and Brenda, I'm glad I'm not the only one...thanks for sharing both of you. When (if) you read my blog you will fell better about your activity with the news. My new use of Twitter this term has definitely impacted my knowledge of current affairs so I think I will continue to rely on it as my news source. I just have to figure out what Boots talked about, getting feeds from both sides.

I had an habit of reading newspaper daily in the morning but as things changed I moved to reading it on my phone... But this habit is declining day by day and I believe it is due to the reason of news being negative.... I also agree that there are times when reading news made me feel sad.. or just frustrated about the things that are going on around us... 3/28/2022 09:13:12 am
OMG, this post was exactly what I needed to read. I was feeling bad about not being up to date on my current events lately, and realized that I have rarely been making a consious effort to engage in the learning. I think COVID had a big part to do with this, and also a toddler and juggling all the things, but until reading your post I was feeling guilty about it. I always appreciate your honesty. Sometimes when my spouse is talking about the latest happenings, I find myself not being able to engage much in the conversation as I am not well versed in what is happening. This was exactly the post I needed. 3/28/2022 11:51:48 pm
Yes, Dylan! I always feel that my biggest downfall is that I don't keep up on news stories involving politics. So many people are interested in the "drama" of politics and want to discuss it at length, especially on the internet. It becomes so overwhelming! On Twitter, I have been working really hard to try to skew my feed away from the constant bombardment of news stories and am slowly creating a space where I can immerse myself in teaching PD. Thanks for your honesty! 8/2/2022 06:54:29 am
